Nordic Lights

Light, Darkness & Colours

NJORD Biennale presents the concert night Light, Darkness & Colours with the eminent Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, who is visiting Denmark for the very first time, and featuring the world-famous cellist Jakob Kullberg as soloist.

On the programme for this unique concert is a series of works by prominent Nordic composers, including Niilo Tarnanen, Hans Peter Stubbe Teglbjærg and Kaija Saariaho, who is the festival composer at NJORD 2016.

Before and after the concert, the spectacular installation NOX BOREALIS containing music by Kaija Saariaho and visuals by Jean-Baptiste Barrière will be on view. The work invites the audience to soar into both aural and visual abstractions of the phenomenon of northern lights, while lying down in the concert hall. Duration of NOX BOREALIS is 20 min. and it will be shown three times before the concert and three times after the concert.

NOX BOREALIS finds its inspiration in two very different sources: the piece Lichtbogen by Kaija Saariaho, and the encounter with professor Unto K. Laine (Helsinki University of Technology) an authority on the current knowledge about northern lights.

Starting from this reflection on aurora borealis and from the analysis of musical forms and more specifically of timbres in Lichtbogen, this visual part sketches a speculative work about the exploration of crossed relations of music and image, through an exploration of light and color.
